I agree that audio triggers are not essential if you're an attentive raider. However, they make things a lot easier, and cut down the likelihood of missing emotes, etc.
I find it means that I can get on with my usual stuff without having to have a part of my attention always on the "other" window for whatever trigger it is for the event I'm doing. I only need to worry about that when the trigger goes off. And when it does, I can deal with it instantly, without triggers, there can be a delay depending where I'm looking at the time.
For a raid as a whole, the more people who have the audio triggers set up, the less likely it is that an emote or response is missed, and the less likely the raid is to fail on that part of the event.

Your brain is an amazing parallel processor, the challenge is getting information to it efficiently so you can make the correct decision on what action to take at any given moment. Audio triggers are one of the tools that SOE has given you to help combat sensory overload on your eyes by moving important announcements to your ears. Unless you are actually deaf, not using them is sorta silly in my opinion. We have raiders that manage without them also. I don't understand why you would try though.
Ugh...

We have some very motivated people in guild who have made audio files for absolutely everything and it's all posted up on the website with detailed walkthru's on how to install them. So when I need to kite hatchet I get a voice that says "kite hatchet now!", or on dao "click the green crystal"..."Don't click anything!", or Sullon "run away!", performer "one".. click hotkey (1).
It was quite humorous one time when I said /gu can we get the MA target set right please, it's confusing!
Everyone clicked button 9 and we instantly failed performer :p
