Dreadspire Keep - A weakness in VP3

After lots and lots of use of VP3, I had come to the conclusion that if you PDed a mob and VP3 stuck, it would always last it's full duration. Up to this point, I had not found any evidence to the contrary...until today.
I got my Dreadspire Keep access a few weeks ago, and I finally manned up and tried to get into the entrance. After a few unsuccessful attempts (nameds was up, tons of see invis around him etc), I was able to maneuver myself and zone in for the first time. My guild leader had told me I might be able to solo some of the entrance mobs in DK for a dinner invitation. Fearlessly I continued on. I found the first KoS mobs -- a pile of rotting bones. 3 were clumped together but as I watched them, they started splitting up and pathing away. I was finally able to get a single. I pulled w/ PD -- success! -- I landed VP3 -- success! Now came the moment of truth, I was not sure if they summoned or not. I landed a turg just in case, Malised. Began to load my dots, and then it happened...VP3 failed. My hopes and dreams, my entire being as a shaman was shaken. I could not believe my eyes. There was a good minute and 15 secs left. Perhaps it was a fluke, I kited for a min and 15 and when it popped back up I landed it again. Unfortunately, this time it broke even faster than last time. Did not have my clicky pants on or root memmed (since I was loading my DoT spellset), he ate me. I want to go back and try Petrifying Earth + Malis and see if that has same result.
Anyone know if these mobs summon? Roughly how much HP they have? I think once they're slowed I can possible tank it and let dogdog beat on it w/ panther while I spam heal myself as long as they don't have too much hp. I'm moderate geared - 12k hp/ 9.5k mana/ 1.8k AC fully raid buffed. 250 AAs. (My magelo's out of date) Any thoughts?
