Some people believe a way to screen is to have a LONG app process where people who stick it out really want to be there. However, you are still in PoTime. I dont think you have a ton of people apping, I could be wrong though. It wouldnt seem logical to make the app process harder or else you run the risk of no one joining.
As far as actions like this, I hate them with a passion. My viewpoint has almost always been as an officer so I have TONS of bias. When I was a raid leader, I'd guide my guild to loot and progression only to see the people I helped the most leave the guild for "better loot". I just had the feeling like "what of all the shit me and the guild did for you? That means nothing compared to loot?"
In the end though, theres really nothing you can do but move on. It sucks and I wish people were better than they are. There is no such thing as loyalty that you can enforce. My condolences to your guild for having to deal with this situation but its part of EQ. Always has been, always will be.
