was kinda hoping they'd remove the target-ability of the idol, similar to chanters.

You can still target it, but it doesn't seem to show up on target nearest PC anymore. But it would be nice if they updated it to be a bit longer - at least the same timer as Enchater totems.

I dropped a couple of these today in a beginner zone, and all surrounding mobs immediatly aggroed me. So it is not working as intended it seems.
