While our army is spread out in Iraq and Afghanistan I don't think they would come into play against China for a while..our Navy can still project power better than anyone, and would probably bear the brunt of our operations for quite a while vs. China...or at least thats what I would think from a laymans perspective.
Should we intervene? First question is what are our treaty obligations.... if we are obligated through previous agreements to defend Taiwan and we went back on such an agreement, it would cause irreperable harm to our future ability to dictate agreements with other countries (imho).
Also there seems to be the thinking that direct conflict with China may be inevitable someday (I can see both sides of the argument). Should we wait for China to continue building up arms and perhaps overcome our current technological edge, or is it more prudent to engage them while we still have that advantage? Most likely it will be a choice of how many will we lose now as opposed to how many we might lose 10 years from now (or whenever they think this may happen)
