While I certainly appreciate that someone named Gloriana is working with someone named Zajeer to make 'changes to right wrongs' where shaman are concerned, I don't think it's near as important as fixing larger class issues. My top issues concerning our class are with the way we have been treated in this expansion.
A bit of history. Unlike many others, I didn't complain during GoD. I genuinely liked LDoN, DoN, and LoY... which gave more definition to our class via spell options than we had before. I'm a proponent for class balance and definition, so unlike many of the more power-hungry shaman I felt the panther nerf was due when it came. Beyond that though I believe that a chromatic, damage proc buff was the right direction to go for our class (even though it further invalidated our DR-DoT line). I like that nobody slows or debuffs (long term) better than we do, still to this day, but I'm also far from alone in feeling that our 'slow solutions' are becoming far less definitive as time grows on. OoW gear covered focuses well, but itemization left something to be desired -- still it was a vast improvement from the horrid GoD itemization.
Now, this DoD expansion hits us. With some of the recent changes to our class, I had some high hopes. As it turns out, every class got at leat one 68/69/70 power they wanted, liked, or at least found useful... well, except shaman. Frankly, we either got the high-hard-shaft on purpose or we were ignored completely. Maybe the person who designed our spells doesn't play a caster at all, let alone a shaman. This is sad to me as we were on such a roll in prior expansions... trading DoT power for heal power wasn't my first choice, but with the rest of ouur improvements I took that in stride. This time they gave us... well... pretty much nothing at all.
So, for your viewing pleasure, here's an anti-DoDH / pro-shaman rant ;).
* I don't have to DoT as well as a necro, I got other talents... but sheesh give me at least one new DoT. Shaman are a DoTting class, right? Supposedly #2 DoT class last time I checked. Give us something to at least compare to that base 956/tick monster you gave necros... heck I'm not greedy... how about 800/tick? We don't need 2 new DoTs, but at least give us one. Currently they have no less than 3 DoTs with base damage that exceeds our highest per-tick DoT, Curse of Sisslak. With their easier access to focus it's probably more like five. Don't alienate our DoT lines please.
* Hungry Plague, eh? It spreads and even lands on DR at -50 too, huh? Well that plague-like concept is sorta neat, and the -50 mod is nice since you won't give us a Malicious-Decay-sinia type spell to lower mob DR further. Still, how about some duration on that spell? Maybe speed reduction over 40%? 50% or 60% perhaps? Our DR slows haven't improved %-wise since at least PoP, and the MR slows even further. Meanwhile, other classes continue to slow better and better. Help us to grow and remain shaman please.
* Oh my, a Lingering Sloth! Defensive proc slow? Neat concept, but at a mere 25% what really is the point? I haven't seen any aggro-tests with it, but I feel confident that it's not worth the buff slot with modern warrior aggro-generation capabilities. This might have use on a bad puller, but let's be realistic... (voice of Obi Wan) these aren't the spells you're looking for.
* Hmm... Breath of Antraygus. Oh neat, a targetted AE nuke! Umm, wait. Hmm. Well, I supposed can use that.. well... hmm... not ever! I know why you make snaring a thing you don't want us to do... that makes sense from the standpoint of class definition. However, please don't insult us by giving us a quad-kite spell. /grr Oddly I do recall a recent test (hard to get mobs close enough together) where I used this and hit more than 4 targets... neat concept for a shaman to be sure. However, if you aren't going to give us range on the 'PBAE' of sorts you've given us, then just don't give us one. I'm better off drinking a Kilva's, casting VS, and healing myself. If I didn't make myself clear already -- I am .NOT. a druid >|.
And now, let's look at what we .didn't. win...
* Spirit of the Feran. That's right, despite all the bitching during the extremely justified Panther nerf, that spell line was a good idea. How can you tell? Well, most of us still use it. It's often too convenient to do 'that much damage' for one cast every 2-4 mobs while taking only one spell gem. So you've heard it from a bonefied shaman... Panther was a good solution. And imho, you can keep that fire burning... now do 500/proc. Not overpowering, good option for you, good option for us.
* Malign... imagine an unresitable Malos type spell, with values at -60 that also includes a DR debuff component that stacks with Malicious Decay or Putrid Decay. Not a super-duper upgrade, but worthy and functional. No game-knowledgable shaman would complain much on that one, espcially if you fixed the DR-DoT line (see next).
* A new DoT. And hey, as long as we are on the subject of DoTs, how about a fixing that DR line? You can start by taking all of the old ones, adding 150% ~ 200% do their per-tick damages and dropping their durations to only 5 ticks... just so long as we are fixing things. I think that's in line with your new re-envisioning strategy, right? Fast DoTs for higher damage? What's more it would make that new Piercing Ring of the Turturer worthwhile. What do you say, SoE? Change the spell, Breath of Antraygus, into a 800/tick, DR-based, 5-tick, DR-based DoT (you won't even have to change the name). Then take all older DR spells, triple their damage/tick, and cut their duration to 5 ticks. Not only do we DoT again, but you've fixed a long standing problem. Huzzah!
* AE Malos... well it doesn't have to be Malos, could be Malo... or even Mala. We are the best debuffers in the game, but lack in the AE department. An AE debuff, while not an upgrade per say, would have made us truly more of a class without being overpowering.
* You broke (fixed?) endurance, and the warriors complained and complained (rightly so), and now you are adding some sort of Flowing Endurance. Fine, fine. How about giving us an Endurance FT type buff, or even one that just raises it a few hundred? You won't let us pump mana, how about giving our Endurance to needy warriors? As lame as that may sound, it has more use for a raiding shaman than what you gave us.
Just some food for thought. You could have given us a new single-target Sense type of spell that gave us only 1% more avoidance and it would have been more welcome than any of what we received in DoD, which was virtually nothing.
Disclaimer. I don't do message boards much, so I only post when I'm moved or rattled. Hopefully I didn't offend too many sensibilities here today ^^.
Cheers.
Safe journey,
