Spell Casting Subtlety has been broken vis-a-vis dots for over four years. It may well still be a current and pressing issue, but trying to address it by using a 12k+nuke tick to illustrate is... not the best way.

It might also be worth mentioning that focuses typically average out to half of their displayed effect ... meaning a 20% focus will average out to 10% additional damage over time. Those calculations show maximum damage and dps.

Well, it's a best-case scenario that they land in the first place. As long as best-case is used in every case, a comparison is just as valid.

BTW, the average effectiveness of a 20% focus is 10.5%, as the focus effect will always give at least 1% modification.

Hehe, yay for accuracy. I did indeed make a mistake calling it Yoppa DPS instead of DPT, but the point still stands with the final result being 450 max possible DPS for just Yoppa's and Sisslak running.

450 <> 600

However, regarding an "average" focus effectiveness of 10% (or 10.5% ) for Burning Affliction, I feel is wrong. I've always rounded down 5% for a focus when calculating likely DPS, and not HALF of the focus's effect. I guess it's off to my logs to check the numbers on that one...

Guess I'm off to my logs to find some actual numbers.

I just posted
http://samanna.net/3pix/pox.text.log and
http://samanna.net/3pix/pox.num1.log - it seemed I had gotten a 31% increase from my BA5 aug. But then I remembered to halve my crits, and
http://samanna.net/3pix/pox.num2.log shows, actually, 15% damage from focus; leaving 16% from crits. Now, that's not a very big sample size, I know that.

Anyone else care to chime in?

Pisser, I'm not very happy now. All these times when I would daydream on how to get max DPS numbers in quick fights to rival my necro buddy's numbers, I would figure in 17% increases for BA5, and 22% for the Muram's anger. A quick run through some of my parses left me very disappointed.

For Muram's anger (25% max):

15.9, 11.8, 10.9, 13, and 12.2 percent average increase, with the crits removed..

12.58% avg focus from a 25% focus..... frigging half. A simple bell-curve.

Which means I am REMOVING that Ritual Nexus Stone. WTH is a 2.5% increase over magic dots compared to BA5? I tell you what it is, a lousy 14 damage. In 6 tics, that's 84 lousy damage.

This only reinforces my battle shammy playstyle. One curse, one rain, and melee for more mana-free damage. A bunch off 400/900 panther crits and the occasional 750/1687 and 175/393 per battle is FAR beyond a 2.5% dot increase or a few tics of a 2nd DOT. And way more fun.

2.5%....pfft...

I know that the data I have on hand is tainted by bard focuses, so I restricted my parses to only mob names that I solo in the nest (a zone I've never grouped in, and mob names I haven't fought elsewhere in the ~4 week period my current log covers) which makes the sample sizes somewhat smaller.

I also restricted my parses to disease and fire based dots because I've had magic and poison affected by other focuses over the past couple of weeks, but fire and disease have only had BA5.

Since dot crits are applied after focus effects I just removed all crits by dividing ticks by 2 when dmg >= basedmg*2.

Chaos Plague:
Total ticks: 2298
Total damage: 633536
Total focus damage: 61334
Avg focus pct: 10.7189419121219

Funeral Pyre of Kelador:
Total ticks: 1296
Total damage: 442075
Total focus damage: 40315
Avg focus pct: 10.0345977698128

Night Fire:
Total ticks: 1939
Total damage: 715483
Total focus damage: 65918
Avg focus pct: 10.1480221378923

Pyre of Mori:
Total ticks: 2995
Total damage: 1385294
Total focus damage: 130389
Avg focus pct: 10.3903482733753

Total for all dots:
Total ticks: 8528
Total damage: 3176388
Total focus damage: 297956
Avg focus pct: 10.6438858635467

I'll PM my perl script to anyone interested if peer review is desired. I'm no guru, but it's simple enough anyway ...

[edit: added the total for all dots]

Total dot ticks: 17572
Total crit ticks: 4276
Percent occurance: 24.3341679945368
Total dot damage: 6782162
Crit damage: 1329741

That's with AA's through DoD Affliction Mastery 3. I do not have DoN tier 4 (or whatever it is) or any worn crit increase. I also do not have the DoD spell that increases crit rates (I think there's one, I could certainly be wrong). All of that is on my necro, if it isn't obvious.

So:

1. Over a sample of 17k+ dot tics, with reportedly 27% crit AAs, you record 24.3% crits.
2. Over that same sample, with reportedly 20% (average) impact improvement focus, you record between 10 and 11 percent.

- Do I understand that properly?

The focus info is entirely in line with what's expected. Our previous numbers were off on crit % for Depths AA

"roughly half" meaning a straight average of the possible focus values, discreetly 1-max% as opposed to 0-max%. It's a holdover from "dice math"

Fun fact from EQ developers: Everquest's internal scripting language (homebrew, naturally  ) deals only with Int variables, nothing else.
